Weather, Food, and Things to Do

August in Dilijan means shifting weather, a forest full of fruit, and good food to match. There are also trails for every pace, and a packed calendar of festivals this month. Here’s a quick rundown of the essentials.

Weather

The average temperature this month is around 19°C. Daytime highs reach 24–26°C, but evenings bring a sharp drop to 12–14°C — pack a light jacket or a warm sweater if you’re planning an evening walk. Short summer showers happen occasionally, though they rarely get in the way of plans. Dilijan sits at about 1,500 meters, so it stays cool even in peak summer, especially in rooms without heating. From mid-month, it gets dark noticeably earlier — around 8:30 PM instead of July’s 9:40 PM — so it’s worth planning evening routes a little earlier.

What’s in Season

What’s ripening in the forest and fields right now

Blackberries

Look for them along the trail to Parz Lake and near Jukhtak Vank — wild and thorny, which is why they taste so sweet.

Raspberries

Catch the last berries of the season before the bushes empty out.

Peaches and plums

The last month of the season — they’ll be gone by September.

Grapes and cornel cherries

They start appearing mid-month, but the real peak comes in September.

Forest and chestnut honey

August is a busy month for Tavush beekeepers — they’re harvesting right now.

On the Table

What’s on the menu in Dilijan this month

Trout from mountain rivers

It’s on almost every menu this month — grilled or in kchuchi, a traditional fish stew.

Tolma with young grape leaves

The last batch of the season — the leaves toughen up after this.

Khashlama with late-summer vegetables

Peppers, eggplant, tomatoes — in this climate, they ripen more slowly than down in the valley.
